IPL 2022: Rishabh Pant loses cool as DC vs RR match ends with no-ball controversy | Cricket News

Rovman Powell’s effort to score 36 off the last over went in vain as Rajasthan Royals beat Delhi Capitals by 15 runs in Match 34 of IPL 2022

The game saw Jos Buttler’s 3rd ton, and superb display of power-hitting from Powell in the end, but it finished with a no-ball controversy.

Here’s what happened:

Needing 223 to win, DC struggled throughout the chase, however Lalit Yadav and Powell brought the equation down to 36 from the 2 overs.

Prasidh Krishna bowled a fantastic 19th over for RR, removing Lalit and finishing with a wicket maiden. That meant Powell had to hit 36 from the last 6 deliveries. It was mathematically possible but practically it was very close to impossible.

Obed McCoy came to bowl the last over and got hit for two back to back sixes. Powell was rising in confidence. McCoy came around the stumps for his third delivery, it was a full-toss and Powell smashed it as well for a long six over deep mid-wicket boundary. That made it 3 sixes in 3 balls. But this was when the controversy erupted. The DC dugout wanted the on-field umpire to check for the above-the-waist no-ball, which was denied.

An angry Rishabh Pant and assistant coach Pravin Amre then signalled the batters – Powell and Kuldeep Yadav – to come back if the umpires were not going to check the no-ball. The replays clearly revealed that height was an issue.

Pant had made up his mind that he wanted to call the players back. But then Shane Watson, DC batting coach, was seen in an animated conversation with the young skipper, trying to calm him down.

The next second Amre was seen running towards the batters but the on-field umpires sent him back after a brief argument. Things settled down quickly after that but by then momentum had gone from Powell and DC.

The match resumed but the West Indian could not connect the remaining 3 balls and DC eventually lost by 15 runs.

A good came of cricket that saw some ridiculous cricketing skills, unfortunately ended with a touch of controversy.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to the controversy:

Earlier, courtesy a magnificent third ton of the season from the bat of Jos Buttler, RR posted an imposing 222/2 after being asked to bat.

Chasing an imposing target, DC captain Rishabh Pant top-scored with a 44 while Prithvi Shaw and Lalit Yadav contributed 37 each.
